Full body blood test: what a comprehensive blood test checks, and what it costs

There is no single standard full body blood test. Most comprehensive panels combine a CBC, a 14-marker CMP, a lipid panel, HbA1c and often TSH for $189 to $405 at a lab, while longevity panels add ApoB, Lp(a), hs-CRP and hormones.

Quick answer

A full body blood test, also sold as a comprehensive blood test or full blood panel, is a bundle of standard lab panels rather than one test. The usual core is a CBC (blood cells), a CMP (14 markers for blood sugar, electrolytes, kidney and liver), a lipid panel, HbA1c and often TSH. Labcorp OnDemand sells that set for $189; Quest's Comprehensive Health Profile is $329 plus a $6 fee for 75+ markers. Longevity-style panels add ApoB, Lp(a), hs-CRP, hormones and nutrients; SiPhox Ultimate 360 covers 62 markers at home for $274, but not a CBC unless you add one.

What does a full blood panel check?

Panel What it measures What it screens for
CBC (complete blood count) Red cells, white cells, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell indices; often a white cell differential Anemia, infection, some blood disorders
CMP (comprehensive metabolic panel) 14 markers: glucose, calcium, sodium, potassium, carbon dioxide, chloride, albumin, total protein, ALP, ALT, AST, bilirubin, BUN, creatinine Blood sugar, fluid and electrolyte balance, kidney and liver function
Lipid panel Total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, VLDL Cardiovascular risk
HbA1c Average blood sugar over about 2 to 3 months Prediabetes (5.7% to 6.4%) and diabetes (6.5% or higher)
TSH Thyroid-stimulating hormone Under- or overactive thyroid
Urinalysis Urine glucose, protein, blood, infection markers Kidney disease, diabetes, urinary infection

That is what most doctors mean by routine blood work, and it is what Labcorp's $189 Comprehensive Health Test and its $219 Men's and Women's Health Tests are built on (the men's version adds total testosterone; the women's adds TSH).

What longevity panels add

The standard set was designed to catch disease that is already present. "Longevity" and preventive panels add markers that help estimate future risk or explain symptoms:

  • ApoB: the count of cholesterol-carrying particles. The 2018 AHA/ACC cholesterol guideline treats ApoB of 130 mg/dL or more as a risk enhancer.
  • Lp(a): a mostly inherited cholesterol particle; 50 mg/dL (or 125 nmol/L) or more is a risk enhancer in the same guideline. Many people only need it measured once.
  • hs-CRP: low-grade inflammation; 2.0 mg/L or more is a risk enhancer.
  • Hormones: testosterone, free testosterone, SHBG, estradiol, FSH, LH, DHEA-S.
  • Nutrients: vitamin D, ferritin and iron studies, B12, folate.
  • Thyroid detail: free T4, free T3 and thyroid antibodies.
  • Metabolic extras: fasting insulin or C-peptide, and sometimes homocysteine or cystatin C.

Where to get a comprehensive blood test

  1. Your doctor. Cheapest if insured. Ask at your annual physical; many plans cover cholesterol and diabetes screening at no cost.
  2. Order direct from a lab (Labcorp OnDemand, Quest). No doctor visit needed; a partner physician signs off. Cash or HSA/FSA.
  3. A yearly membership (Function Health, Superpower). The most markers per dollar, two draws a year. See Function Health vs Superpower.
  4. At home with SiPhox. No needle and no lab, and you can repeat parts of it every 1 to 6 months.

SiPhox and the full panel: the gaps

SiPhox is not a like-for-like replacement for a doctor's routine panel, and it is worth knowing exactly where it differs:

  • No CBC by default. Every SiPhox panel reports hemoglobin and a calculated hematocrit, but a CBC is a +$45 add-on. SiPhox lists it as hematocrit, hemoglobin, MCH, MCHC, MCV, RBC, RDW and WBC; the listing does not include platelets or a white cell differential.
  • No full CMP. Longevity Essentials has none of the CMP's kidney or liver markers. Heart & Metabolic covers 7 of the 14 (ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin, total protein, BUN, creatinine) and Ultimate 360 adds albumin for 8. No SiPhox panel includes glucose, sodium, potassium, chloride, carbon dioxide or calcium.
  • No urinalysis, since it is a blood-only kit.
  • No fasting insulin, homocysteine or cystatin C on current panels. SiPhox measures C-peptide and HbA1c for metabolic health instead.

Leaving glucose and potassium out is partly a feature: they are the two markers that failed accuracy limits in a 2025 study of upper-arm capillary collection (see are at-home blood tests accurate). But it means SiPhox complements routine blood work rather than replacing it.

Which full panel to choose

Worked example: one year of full-body testing, four ways

Take Lisa, 50, a hypothetical reader who wants one complete picture this year and a way to see whether her cholesterol and hormones move after she changes her diet. Option A: Quest Comprehensive Health Profile once, $335 with the fee, 75+ markers at a lab, no repeat. Option B: Labcorp's $189 Comprehensive Health Test for the routine CBC, CMP, lipids, HbA1c and urinalysis, plus SiPhox Longevity Essentials twice at $149 for ApoB, Lp(a), hs-CRP and hormones at home: $487. Option C: Function Health at $365 for 160+ tests across two Quest draws. Option D: SiPhox Ultimate 360 with the CBC ($319) as her baseline, then Longevity Essentials for the other three quarters ($447): $766 for four needle-free tests. Option C is the cheapest route to breadth; Option D is the only one with four readings and no lab visits.

How to prepare for a comprehensive blood test

  • Fasting. Panels that include glucose and a lipid panel usually ask for a fast; Labcorp asks for 12 hours (water is fine) before its Comprehensive Health Test. SiPhox panels do not include glucose, but follow the kit's own instructions.
  • Biotin. High-dose biotin interferes with some lab tests. Labcorp asks you to stop it at least 72 hours before.
  • Time of day. If the panel includes testosterone or cortisol, test in the morning, and at the same time on every repeat.
  • Recent illness. Infection and inflammation raise CRP, so if you have just been ill, wait until you have recovered.
  • Medications and supplements. Keep a list and share it with whoever interprets the results.

How often to get a full body blood test

For healthy adults, once a year with an annual physical is common, and many people with normal results need it less often. Your doctor may test more often if you have a condition or take medication that affects the kidneys, liver or blood sugar. Testing more often than yearly makes most sense for a few markers you are actively trying to change, such as ApoB after starting a statin or HbA1c in the prediabetes range, rather than the whole panel. A practical split is one big panel a year (lab, membership or Ultimate 360) and a smaller panel in between; our blood test subscription guide compares the costs.

What a blood test cannot tell you

"Full body" is marketing. A blood panel does not image organs, check your heart rhythm or replace cancer screening such as colonoscopy or mammography. Normal results do not rule out disease, and an out-of-range result on a single test is often a false alarm. Bring results to your doctor, especially anything flagged high or low.

Frequently asked questions

What does a full blood panel check?

Typically a CBC (blood cells), a CMP (blood sugar, electrolytes, kidney and liver), a lipid panel, HbA1c and often TSH and urinalysis. Broader panels add ApoB, Lp(a), hs-CRP, hormones and nutrients.

How much does a full blood panel cost without insurance?

About $189 for Labcorp OnDemand’s Comprehensive Health Test, $329 to $399 plus a $6 fee for Quest’s profiles, and $274 per test for SiPhox Ultimate 360 at home.

Is there a blood test that checks everything?

No. No single test checks everything, and blood tests cannot replace imaging or cancer screening. The largest consumer options measure 150 to 160+ markers a year.

Does SiPhox include a CBC?

Not by default. Each panel reports hemoglobin and a calculated hematocrit, and a CBC is a $45 add-on per test.

Do I need to fast for a comprehensive blood test?

Labcorp asks for a 12-hour fast for its Comprehensive Health Test because it includes glucose and lipids. Follow the instructions for the specific kit or lab.
